In the midst of December’s swirl of gatherings, parties, and catch-ups, there’s one gift that never runs out: a genuine compliment. Science shows that small moments of praise are more powerful than we think. In a series of studies, psychologists Erica Boothby (University of Pennsylvania) and Vanessa Bohns (Cornell University) found that people consistently underestimate how good their compliments make others feel and overestimate how awkward those moments might be. Yet, every time participants offered a kind word, both the giver and the receiver walked away happier, and the givers said they were more likely to compliment others again in the future.
Even brief, casual praise (“I love your scarf” or “That was such a thoughtful comment”) can lift moods for hours. According to Psychology Today, most of us hold back because we fear sounding insincere or making someone uncomfortable, but those fears are misplaced. Compliment recipients actually report feeling flattered, pleased, and grateful. At the same time, givers experience a boost in their own mood and social confidence.
So as you navigate this festive season, think of compliments as emotional currency and small investments that grow happiness on both sides. Your kind words might be the highlight of someone’s day. And in giving that light away, you might just find yourself shining a little brighter too.
