Happiness is often seen as something we have to generate from within. Still, one of the most uplifting sources of joy comes from outside of us: celebrating the successes of others. This is the idea of borrowed joy, the happiness we feel when we share in someone else’s win. Whether it is a friend landing their dream job, a sibling finishing a marathon, or a colleague receiving recognition at work, their joy has the power to lift us too.
When we allow ourselves to genuinely feel happy for someone else, we tap into a sense of connection. Instead of comparison or envy, we open the door to gratitude and closeness. Research shows that positive emotions can spread socially, much like ripples in a pond. By leaning into another person’s happiness, we get to feel those ripples ourselves. In fact, practicing this mindset can strengthen relationships, increase empathy, and remind us that we are part of something bigger than our individual struggles.
You can start small. The next time someone shares good news, pause and let yourself truly celebrate with them. Smile, say out loud how excited you are for them, or even take a quiet moment to feel pride on their behalf. These little acts create space for joy to grow in both of you.
Borrowed joy is a beautiful reminder that happiness is not a limited resource. When we share in each other’s light, we make the world feel brighter for everyone, including ourselves.
